Are you a “real? college?
Aviva Institute is registered as a private institution with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education pursuant to sections 136A.61 to 136A.71 Registration is not an endorsement of the institution. Credits earned at the institution may not be transferred to all other institutions.
Are you accredited?
Aviva Institute was designed to meet or exceed the standards for accreditation from US Department of Education-approved agencies that specialize in Direct Entry Midwifery, Lactation and Distance Education.
Our preliminary application for accreditation by the Midwifery Education and Accreditation Council (MEAC) was accepted on October 28, 2008. The accreditation process can take up to two years from this date to complete successfully. If we are approved, only students enrolled at the time accreditation is approved and those enrolling after that date will be eligible to graduate from a MEAC-accredited program. Accreditation is not retroactive. For further information, contact MEAC at 360-466-2080 or PO Box 984, LaConner, WA 98257.
As new school, how do I know the quality of your education?
Although we are a new school, ourstaff brings over thirty years of experience training midwives, including the operation of four different midwifery schools. Visit our Staff page to see the qualifications of the administrative staff, the pages for both Academic and Clinical Faculty. However this is not to say there will not be bugs, changes, and occasional glitches as we work on developing the program.
Is auditing courses an option?
Students may audit courses if space is available, as long as the prerequisites are met. Courses are registered and paid for in full, during regular registration. There is no credit given for a course that has been audited, and a grade of “AU? will be assigned. Students who register to audit are expected to attend class and fully participate in the course. They are not required to take tests, but can if they wish. The instructor is not required to grade papers or give feedback to students who are auditing a course. To change from a grade to an audit, students must apply in writing within the first week of a six week course, and the first four days of a three week course.
There is also an option for non matriculating students to take course on an individual basis, as credit courses. There is an additional fee for non matriculating students.
Are there on-site courses I need to attend?
No, all academics are online, your clinical practice is in your home community.
We have no plans to have an on-site program, we believe our distance model gives students access to the best faculty and staff.
