Recent guidelines have changed for the process of being an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
To meet IBLCEās exam eligibility requirements, all future lactation consultants must complete education in human lactation and breastfeeding. IBLCE recommends at least 80-150 hours of education in the subjects and disciplines listed on the IBLCE Exam Blueprint.
The requirement for education in human lactation and breastfeeding varies depending upon the eligibility pathway that you follow and the year in which you sit the exam. The table below describes the minimum education requirements for the three pathways 2011 and 2012.
Pathway |
2011 Minimum Required Education |
2012 Minimum Required Education |
1 |
45 hours of education in human lactation and breastfeeding that was completed within the 5 years immediately prior to applying for the exam |
90 hours of education in human lactation and breastfeeding that was completed within the 5 years immediately prior to applying for the exam |
2 |
IBLCE requires that academic programs in human lactation and breastfeeding integrate at least 90 hours of classroom instruction into the curriculum. |

Education that has been approved by the Approval and Accreditation Review Committee (AARC) on Education in Human Lactation and Breastfeeding has been determined to meet the educational needs of student lactation consultants. In conjunction with the International Lactation Consultant Association, IBLCE co-sponsors AARC and prospective IBCLCs are encouraged to enroll in education that has been approved by AARC. In addition to pre-exam education, applicants should expect to spend considerable time in self-study. The IBLCE Suggested Resource List provides information about books, websites, journals and other resources that student lactation consultants will find helpful.
