INTR 0201 Orientation and Study Success
Orientation to Aviva Institute distance programs, required for all midwifery programs with the exception of continuing education courses.
Objectives Overview:
- Orientation to the software used by Aviva, its features, navigation, assessments, feedback, forums, etc.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Aviva Institute student policies including: grades, attendance,
participation, discussion forum rules, honor code, and APA formatting.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of midwives, routes of entry, duties, responsibilities, and the CPM process.
- Demonstate an understanding of other careers in Maternal/Child Health including the Lactation field.
- Identify the student’s personal learning style using a variety of models.
- Describe the principle of various adult learning and teaching modalities (list provided)
- List how adult educational principles are used in maternal/child health care.
- Define and elaborate on time management and student success strategies.

MED 0302 Essentials of Medical Terminology
Essentials of Medical Terminology with a focus on relevance for midwives and other maternal/childhealth professionals.

Required Hardware: Headphones or speakers to listen to audio files. An Mp3 player will free you from sitting at your computer, but is not required.
Credits and Length: Three credit, Four week course.
Prerequisite: INTR 0201 Orientation and Study Success
Enrollment: Open. Non-native English speakers must have a TOEFL iBT score of 79 or higher.

BIOL 0603 Anatomy & Physiology for Childbearing
Overview:
Overview of structure and function of the human body and how pregnancy impacts each system. Includes: Cells and tissues; The nervous system; The endocrine System; The special senses; The integumentary system; The cardiovascular system; The lymphatic system; The respiratory system; The musculoskeletal system; The digestive system; The renal system; The male and female reproductive systems including cultural aspects of menstruation, FGM and its effect on the childbearing woman. Empasis on the adaptation of anatomy and physiology of the maternal/fetal dyad is an overarching theme.
This course is an accelerated six credit, eight week course and requires a committment of 15-20 hours a week in study and participation.
